Beautiful Blue Kitchens We Love
Color is the perfect antidote to a ho-hum, cookie-cutter kitchen, and our top pick is blue. It’s a calming color that studies say is a favorite for both men and women around the world. And it comes in an endless array of shades that coordinate with wood tones, white, black, and just about any metal finish. Enjoy some beautiful blue with these bold kitchens.
Blue Kitchen with a Feature Wall
I’ll always love this kitchen and the clients who let me design it. They weren’t afraid of color and wanted something that made a statement. The sunburst encaustic tile (Erizo Blue by Riad Tile), and the intense blue cabinetry paint (Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore) give this kitchen a cheerful always on vacation feeling.
Blue Kitchen with a European Vibe
This kitchen is rooted in a house on a hill in Nashville, Tennessee, but this shade of blue places it firmly in Europe. It reminds me of the quaint blue houses with scalloped trim you find in Zaandam, a city in the Netherlands. There’s something serene and sweet to this blue-gray shade (Benjamin Moore’s Black Horizon), and the way it seamlessly ties together the brick, white cabinetry, and honed granite on the counters and behind the range.
Beachy Blue Kitchen
Here’s another blue-gray hue that’s becoming a new favorite: Ocean Floor by Benjamin Moore. I love the way it grounded this kitchen remodel and added a soothing blue note that reminds me of Provence. Finding the right traditional rug and Le Creuset pot to complement the cabinetry was a perfect bonus.
Blue Kitchen with Belgian-Style
How could you not love the softly intense blue designer Erin Sander used on this kitchen coffee bar? It’s in a Belgian-style farmhouse kitchen that also has dreamy arches and textured subway tile and honey-toned floating shelves. It looks like an early morning bay we’ve seen on the Big Island of Hawaii. While we don’t know the exact name of this shade, it’s close to Farrow & Ball’s Graupel Blue, Stratosphere by Glidden, or Benjamin Moore’s Jet Stream.
Long Island Leisure
The nautical feeling just made sense for this light-filled kitchen overlooking the Long Island Sound. I chose a deep, watery blue (Van Deusen Blue from Benjamin Moore) to give it a sense of place, and added details like the shiplap ceiling and the metal pendant lights. I’m proud that it was a finalist in Westchester Home magazine’s design competition.
See You in Santorini
Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill aim to design homes that people want to spend time in, and they used all their skills on the restoration of their 1871 farmhouse in Connecticut. The kitchen is illuminated by the bank of windows over the Statuarietto marble sink, and a brilliant shade of blue (Farrow & Ball’s De Nimes) that looks like the Aegean Ocean on a sunny day. And as the New York Times feature details, De Nimes is stunning with the white oak countertop on the island topped by vintage white fluted pendant lights.
